Satank-Kiowa.JPG

Satank (Set-angya or Set-ankeah, translated as 'A Quiet Sitting Bear') was a prestigious Kiowa warrior and medicine man. He was born about 1800, probably in Kansas, and killed June 8, 1871 by American soldiers as he tried to flee captivity. In 1870 his son, also named Satank, was killed in a raid in Texas. Disconsolate, the old man carried some of his son's bones with him. (See Wikipedia: Satank)

In 1978, a gentleman approached me at an art show in Los Angeles where I was showing work; he handed me a 14X17 black and white original mounted photo, and asked if I would paint it for him. We exchanged information. I was not able to make contact with him again after the painting was completed. Recently through online research I  learned that Carlotta Lubo is a noted and collectible basket weaver of the Santa Isabel tribe of southern California. She died in 1968 at around 120 years old. I was able to connect with Carlotta's  great granddaughter. The painting and photograph have been gifted to her.
